Healthy Neighborhoods

A Reuter’s report published in December 2016 highlighted that South Bend had a high number of children with elevated lead blood levels, with 17% of children tested in the Southeast neighborhood having elevated levels. A preventative approach to the lead issue in the Southeast neighborhood was needed. By incorporating community outreach and education, the residents are empowered  to become champions of the issue. To support the effort, we tested a new lead risk report, planned an affordable remediation pilot program, and coordinated a Lead Education Panel. These tools can be utilized to provide families with the resources they need to get their homes in a lead-safe state.

Community

Engagement

Interns collaborated with a variety of different groups around South Bend to develop a sustainable plan for the Southeast Neighborhood. The map to the right shows the elevated blood lead levels documented in South Bend. The more red an area is, the higher the concentration of blood lead levels were found.
